What do you really know about PET plastic preforms?

PET preforms are cylindrical structures that serve as the precursor to PET containers. Acting as a transitional item in the manufacturing process, these preforms can be shaped into various final container designs and come in different weights, colors, and forms.

The production of PET preforms begins with heating granulated resin to create a uniform mixture, which is then injected into a mold and cooled to solidify. The resulting thick-walled preforms are not yet finished; they require a blowing process that ultimately transforms them into bottles.

PET preforms and plastic containers

PET preforms vary in weight from 10 grams to 750 grams, depending on the type of container needed. Larger and thicker PET preforms necessitate more material due to their size.

Many plastic container manufacturers typically purchase these preforms, as their production involves numerous complex factors that require expert knowledge. Critical elements include the injection speed and temperature of the resin, cooling speed and temperature, water pressure used during the process, and the composition of the coolant.

After obtaining the PET preforms, the next step involves initiating the blowing process. The preforms are heated to achieve a malleable state and then inflated with air at an appropriate velocity for each specific container until they make contact with the mold that shapes them. Following this, they undergo cooling and demolding to produce the final bottles.
